BUSINESS
Q: SPEL? What is so different about it?
Studley Park Enterprise Limited is an entity that encompasses diversity, productivity, performance and profitability, with its main focus on Human Capital, thereby making it unique in its operations. SPEL’s team possesses the skill set that would be needed to guarantee results.
Q: Who is East the Professional – What makes you the best man for the job?
As a trained engineer and with over twenty-five years of experience, this provides the platform for the launch of an exciting era in my life at SPEL. Additionally, the attainment of an MBA, with a specialization in finance, provides the opportunity to leverage this training that will result in profitability for the organisation. I am registered with the Board of Engineers (BOE) Trinidad and Tobago, also the Association of Professional Engineers of Trinidad and Tobago (APETT).
Q: As senior management, what, for you, characterize(s) a good employer and a good job?
For me, what consists of a good employer is the care and concern that the employer expresses to the employees. He should be in tuned with and be a part of what is taking place on the job. He should know his employees and motivate them, and he should be sensitive to their needs. A good job is a job that allows me to say “Yes, well done!” at the end of the day. You are satisfied, having a feeling of accomplishment.
Q: What do you believe will change in the next few years at Studley Park Enterprise Limited (SPEL) and what are the aspirations for the company?
What I believe will change in the next few years, is that SPEL will be one of the forces in the aggregate industry to be reckoned with in terms of the supply of quality, crushed aggregate. Additionally, exporting to the region will form a greater part of our marketing plan. It will be the destiny for your aggregate supply.
PERSONAL
Q: We’ve heard about your commitment to business, do tell of your personal background?
Born in Jamaica, and as a Caribbean man, my outlook, perspective and values were formed by the Christian upbringing received from my parents, which I shared with my wife Debra and three children, Javan, John-Paul and Danielle. Coming from a large family, you have to develop the skill to deal with people, camaraderie and at the same time, acquire a sense of independence. Being a past student of Cornwall College, Montego Bay, I participated in football, athletics, cricket, field hockey (was on UWI Mona field hockey team) and at one time, I attempted to make the Water Polo Team. I came to Trinidad to do Engineering in the 80’s and I have been here since.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy going to the movies, singing, attending sports games and when the opportunity presents itself, I participate. I am also a member of the Men’s Crusaders, a Trinidad based Christian group that caters for the development of youth (especially young men in the community).
Q: What’s your pet peeve?
Dishonest individuals and those who are unable to keep their word. One should be able to stick to is or her word when they are given. If changes were made to the previous agreement by one party, the other party should also be informed.
Q: Is there one individual that inspires you?
I do not have a specific role model; however, I admire people who are diligent in what they do and can produce effective results.
